When talking about thriving black metal scenes, Portugal might not immediately come to mind like SoCal’s Black Twilight Circle or the burgeoning Québécois scene, but it has more than its fair share of killer bands.
None of them really sound like Epping Forest, either, who are set to return with labeBVoid, their first new full-length in nearly a decade. Given the other bands that drummer Menthor is currently involved with—Nightbringer, Lvcifyre, and Necrosadist—I was expecting some fairly orthodox second wave black metal, but the band incorporates elements from across the black metal spectrum on a surprisingly varied and highly enjoyable album.
The record, which is a concept album that follows the path of a universe loosely based on Sumerian mythology from its origin through its apocalypse.
