‘The Whitecrow’ starts with the deep, dark voice of Paul Speckmann, who, in true voiceover style, introduces the theme of the record to us – followed by the title track. It is clear from the get go that Hypnos use their catchy, driven midtempo death as a foundation, but they build upon that foundation by using lots of different influences and elements. Spoken word, guest musicians, guest vocalists (both male and female), more varied vocal styles by Bruno himself, epic, orchestral elements: Hypnos use all of these, and more. The main ingredient still is their own brand of death metal, which they have mastered throughout their almost 20 year career, but they play with the genres staples as well: the album is more lingering, less explosive, less “openly violent”, but also much more looming, threatening, darker and more varied than we have seen before from these guys. The tone or theme of ‘The Whitecrow’ is melancholic, dark and sober, but it somehow comes across as positive, or at least with a positive message as well. The soun of ‘The Whitecrow’ fits the new course perfectly: clear and rich. Five years after 'Heretic Commando – Rise of the New Antikrist', Czech deathsters Hypnos return to form: 'The Whitecrow' is probably their darkest and most varied release to date!
